BRANSON GIVES BIG!

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

On July 26th, 2008 The Stars of Branson will come out to “GIVE BIG!” in a special Benefit Event for the Midwest Flood Victims.

The day begins with Redknecker’s Good Morning Ozarks Show; the outdoor event begins at 11AM with a Family Festival on the theatre’s huge patio and the Benefit Show begins at 3PM. Some of Branson’s biggest Stars and finest performers will come together for this one-time special event. The star studded line-up includes: Jim Stafford, The Lennon Sisters, Jim Barber, The Hughes, Doug Gabriel, Dave and Denise Hamner, the cast of Breaking Up Is Hard To Do; a musical featuring the songs of Neil Sedaka, Delena Ditto, David Lomascola, Gail Lennon and the Buzz Boyz, Redkneckers, and The Branson Divas. Tickets are $20.00 plus tax and can be purchased by calling Branson Star Theatre at 471-334-7131 or at Ticketmaster.com. Proceeds from the benefit show will go to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The full day of activities will conclude with the two regular 8PM shows in Branson Star Theatre’s two performance halls; “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do;” a musical featuring the songs of Neil Sedaka and The David Lomascola Show. In addition to being a part of the 3PM Benefit Show, all three of the theatre’s regular shows will contribute a portion of that day’s proceeds to the fund raising effort.

Branson locals and visitors are all invited to join in the fund raising effort and the fun at the “Branson Gives Big” outdoor Family Festival from 11AM to 3PM. Fun Family activities will include free outside-stage entertainment; a variety of food, including “Dollar Dogs” and Golden Corral’s famous sandwich lunches; vendors; inflatables; kid friendly games and prizes. “We are very excited about the outpouring from the Branson community and we are looking forward to a very fun event that is so much more special because all the vendors are donating a portion of their proceeds to the relief effort,” states one event coordinator, Angela Walker.

One of the most exciting aspects of the “BRANSON GIVES BIG” project is that we are bringing several families directly affected by the weather disasters to Branson that weekend for an all-expense-paid family vacation. “The community has given rooms, meals, show and attraction tickets; all free for these families. We are so grateful, however, we do still need to pay for the travel expenses of these families and are actively looking for donations to accomplish this,” comments Linda Buckles event co-coordinator. “We are asking for help from the community to raise the funds for the travel expenses and any amount will be appreciated.” Please contact Linda at 417-593-6060 or Angela at 417-336-2442 to donate to the cause.

Vendor space is still available. For this unique opportunity there is FREE vendor space for seven more vendors on a “first come” basis. Contact Angela Walker at 417-336-2442 for details.

Angela Walker, spokesperson for “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” and one of the event organizers comments, “Let’s face it, the people affected by these floods in the Midwest are our neighbors and our customers. I have lived in Branson for over 20 years and have not seen such devastation as I have seen I the last few weeks. As a community, Branson is always will to help in a crisis and our neighbors need us now. I challenge every in Branson to show our neighbors what all of is here already know: “Branson Gives Big!”

Merle Haggard to perform in Branson

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

His seemingly endless list of hit songs is only part of what makes Merle Haggard a country music legend. He is respected by artists encompassing all types of music.

In the past couple years he has been asked to join Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones on stage in front of sold out stadium crowds. Merle brings that legendary voice and equally legendary catalog of hit songs to Branson at The Tri-Lakes Center, 2527 State Highway 248, on Monday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m.

This is a rare stop for Merle who generally plays to huge outdoor festivals or large casino audiences. Bob Cannella with Up Close Concerts, who is presenting the event, says a lot of work on both sides went into making this event happen.

“Merle wanted to perform in this area because so many fans have requested it, and we wanted to bring him here,” Cannella said. “Fortunately, we were able to make the scheduling work and are looking forward to an incredible night of music on August 4.”

The Tri-Lakes Center is an ideal venue to see Merle Haggard. At just 2500 seats it’s large enough to support a major star like Merle, yet small enough for amazing sound and a clear view of this country music legend.

“Tickets for the Branson show range from $30 -$50 so there is something to fit everyone’s budget,” Cannella said. “This is an incredible opportunity to see a country music legend at a great price in a small venue. There’s nothing like seeing Merle up-close.”

Tickets go on sale Monday, July 7 at the Tri-Lakes Center box office, or by calling 417-336-0219. More information about the show may be found at www.upcloseconcerts.com.

Commission approves billboard leases at airport

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

By Vonda Sheets

vsheets@tri-lakestribune.com

A short meeting Monday by Taney County commissioners proved beneficial nonetheless.
The Hiding Place emergency women’s shelter was awarded a state grant of
$10,956 in matching funds. Commissioners had to approve the grant, which passed 2-0.
Presiding Commissioner Chuck Pennel and Eastern Taney County Commissioner Danny Strahan also approved two contracts for billboard leases at the county’s airport in Hollister.

“Several businesses pay $800 per year to advertise at the airport,” noted Pennel. The signs are approximately 3′ x 5′ in size.

In passing, Pennel said the airport’s manager, Mark Parent, has been overseeing operations for three years, and his contract was recently renewed by the airport’s board of directors.
Resident Bobby Clay asked on the behalf of several Forsyth residents about the status of the Casey Road project.

The $1.8 million project has been postponed at times due to weather, making it unlikely to be finished by mid-August as originally anticipated.

However, Clay said, “People keep calling each other, talking about it, and things keep building,” as far as rumors regarding cost overruns go.

Pennel told Clay the project is on budget, but one aspect of the project has cost more than planned. Strahan and Pennel both commented that rebuilding the road has been complicated by the fact that there is little base rock in places, making it necessary to haul in rock for parts of the road.

In some places, I think, we’ve had to put down 10 feet of rock for stabilization purposes,” said Pennel.

“The county is coming out in good shape on the project,” mentioned Strahan.

Kanakuk Kamp going strong after 82 years

Monday, June 16th, 2008

By Josh Clark
jclark@tri-lakestribune.com

For well over 80 years, Kanakuk Kamps have been giving children from all over the world a summer to remember. Nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, all seven camps in Missouri are nestled on gorgeous lakefront property, and the Colorado camp is next to the Pine River in the foothills of the San Juan Mountains.

Featuring over 70 sports and activities, top-notch equipment and 2,500 hand-picked, dedicated Christian staff there’s fun and encouragement for every child.

The Kanakuk camps in Branson are hidden along the beautiful lake Taneycomo, providing great scenery for a summer full of fun. Other camps in Missouri include locations west of Lampe, south of Shell Knob and due east of Branson West. The original camp was founded in 1926 by C.L. Ford of Dallas, Texas.
In the early days, before the Table Rock dam, Ford would bring the campers via train to Hollister where they would get into a paddle boat. As the made their way up the White River, they were dropped off on the shore of the lake to rough it for nearly ten weeks.

One of the more memorable activities for those early campers included a hike out to Marvel Cave, where Silver Dollar City is located today. They were essentially emersed in the wilderness for this time and it served as a great leadership experience.

Things have changed since the camp was founded 82 years ago. In 1932, coach Bill Lantz became the Director of Kugaho, changed the name to Kanakuk, and instilled the “Four Square” and “I’m Third” Christian doctrines.

The “Four Square” comes directly from the book of Luke 2:52, which says “And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and man…” The “I’m Third” motto is simple, to the point and is still a big part of the Kanakuk way of life. It simply states that “God comes first, others come second and I’m third”.
Since 1976, Kanakuk Kamps owners and K-2 Directors, Joe and Debbie Jo White, have shared a deep passion for pointing Kids to Christ through the best in Christian sports camping. Together they have seen Kanakuk grow into something they are very proud of. Joe played football at S.M.U. where Debbie Jo was a cheerleader. Joe then coached at Texas A&M before moving to Missouri in 1972.

Joe has since written 19 books and speaks across the country for AfterDark, Pure Excitement and Focus on the Family Debbie Jo trains the leadership and staff in Precepts Bible study and leads and organizes with both dignity and grace. Joe and Debbie Jo have four grown children and eight grandchildren.

Kanakuk is a non-denominational camp that offers the best of sports camps and the best of Christian camps together. True each fills their summer with memories that they will take with them forever, but the camps also focus on the Christian element in athletics.

Campers have study and devotional time at the end of each day of activities.

And oh those activities are a big part of what brings campers back year after year.
Football, volleyball, wrestling dance, ping pong and archery are all traditional favorites, but all campers seem most impressed with the water slides, trampolines, rappelling, rock climbing and the zip line.

“The zip line was awesome,” said Garon Clark, a first time camper. “It went over and into the water. It was great.”

Fellow camper Maggie Grace added “I liked to swim every day, especially jumping off the trampoline by the pool.”

This year alone, 14,397 campers are enrolled at Kanakuk. Some campers come from as far as Iraq, but representatives from five of the seven continents are represented. As the camp grew, expansion was a necessity.

The original site, now known as K-1 is for children ages 7-13. While first a camp for just boys, the ladies began attending several years later.

K-2, for teenage campers ages 13-18, was opened in 1978, followed by K-Life in 1979 which is a ministry for teen mentoring.

1983 saw more expansion with the K-West Kamp for ages 12-14, which is located just outside Lampe, followed by K-Kountry for pre-teen campers in 1988. Kids across America for urban youth began in 1991 with nine more camps between then and 2006.

Kanakuk Kamps currently offers 25, 13 and seven day camps. Parents also won’t be left out in the dark as to the goings on of the camp while the children are away.

On the Kanakuk website there is a place just for parents to see pictures, send emails, manage family information and even enroll returning campers.

The camp also offers “Last Minute” scholarships, which are fully paid trips to camp for those without the means to pay the fees. The last minute scholarships are for campers within a certain radius of the camps that can show up in just a matter of days.

While attempting to stay below the radar in many respects, Kanakuk sponsors several events in the community and is always eager to assist the Tri-Lakes area.

Many of the families have made Kanakuk their summer home for generations.

The bonds of Christian friendships built there literally last a lifetime.

Full camps every summer and long waiting lists in the spring attest to the priority families place on getting their kids to camp each year.

Hollister Chamber discusses growth

Monday, June 16th, 2008

By Josh Winborne
jwinborne@tri-lakestribune.com

The Hollister Chamber of Commerce held its monthly luncheon at College of the Ozarks’ Keeter Center Thursday for a roomful of Hollister business owners. The meeting was sponsored by White River Valley Electric Cooperative.

After a delicious meal served by the Keeter Center staff, Dan Lennon, vice-president of marketing and public relations for the Branson Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, stepped to the podium to discuss changes in Mo. tourism bills, namely the FY09, Fiscal Year 2009, Mo.

Division of Tourism Matching Grant Program and the opportunities it presents for area tourism-related businesses.

FY09 proposes to match 50 percent of Division-approved marketing programs, such as television and magazine ads for Qualified Destination Marketing Organizations (DMO’s), such as the Branson/Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (BLACVB).

Each DMO must be certified with the State of Missouri, but will be funded at levels from $10,000 to $660,000. This money will be used to promote the tourism industry in the Tri-Lakes area, through advertising, public relations, publicity, leisure group and convention sales, publications and special events.
Lennon reported that in 2008 tax revenues totaled $7,500,606, with a marketing budget equaling that sum. The chamber is projecting that 2009 tax revenues will be approximately $8,700,000, marking a significant growth.

FY09 stipulates that only one DMO per county will receive funding and will be appointed by the Taney County Commission and certified by the Mo.

Division of Tourism. In order to qualify for the funding, each DMO accepts additional responsibility for promoting local tourism.

The bill provides new opportunities for tourism businesses by opening access to listings, advertising and promotional lodging prospects. This includes free basic listings on explorebranson.com, as well as 300,000 Branson/Lakes Area Vacation Guides; the chance to advertise on BLACVB website and Vacation Guide and inclusion of events in BLACVB calendar of events and “Day Trip” section, in print and online.

Next to speak was Dino Kartsonakis, owner of Dino’s 24 Karrot Bakery, expressing how happy he is to join the chamber. He said that he is amazed at the growth that is taking place in downtown Hollister and that he is glad to be a part of it.

Kartsonakis also expressed his desire to see the Branson Scenic Railway stop on its way through Hollister.
“We have a beautiful depot that is not being used,” he said.

The idea of the train stopping, and therefore promoting business, was well received by the assembled group. Kartsonakis stated that one of his business associates were in the process of discussing the possibility with Branson Scenic Railway.

“I think this will get done faster and easier if we approach this as a team effort,” he said, encouraging other business owners to get involved in the issue.

Carol Turpin, of Gerken & Associates Realtors, received the honor of being Chamber volunteer of the month. Congratulations and thank you to Turpin for her service.

For additional information on FY09, contact BLACVB at 1-800-BRANSON or visit www.explorebranson.com. For additional information on the Hollister Chamber of Commerce activities, call 417-334-3050 or visit info@hollisterchamber.net.
